Green Point World Cup Stadium Cape Town

The Green Point Stadium has had its capacity tripled for the World Cup 2010 and it is stunningly set overlooking the mountains and the beach in Cape Town. The original stadium was a multi purpose stadium which was used as a home ground for clubs Santos and Ajax Cape Town. The stadium was also used for concerts for acts such as U2, Michael Jackson and Robbie Williams.

Amazingly it was originally built to hold just 18, 000 people but that capacity has had to be almost quadrupled for the 2010 World Cup. The Stadium is very new, it only opened in January when the two native club sides, Santos and Ajax Cape Town, played out a 0-0 draw. that event was only watched by 20, 000 fans and in February that attendance was doubled when the stadium hosted its first rugby match, Vodacom Stormers beat Boland Invitationals 47-13.

Portugal and Holland will both play group games at Green Point Stadium and two of the other World Cup group matches are Italy v Paraguay, which could determine the winner of that group, and also France v Uruguay, the second match at the World Cup 2010. English fans will be looking out for this stadium as they face African opposition in the form of Algeria here. Green Point Stadium is also due to host one second round game, one quarter final and one semi final.

With so much talk of altitude at the World Cup players do not have to fear playing at Green Point Stadium, it is located either side of a mountain range on the Cape Peninsula.

The football history of Cape Town is quite diverse, the area of Cape Flats was the birth place to Benni McCarthy and also Quentin Fortune.
