Loftus Versfeld Stadium World Cup Stadium Pretoria

The Loftus Versfeld Stadium has been home to sporting events for over 100 years but it's biggest event is yet to come, that is likely to be the Group A match between hosts South Africa and Uruguay. It is one of the oldest stadiums in South Africa, it was first used back in 1903. The first stands at the ground could only hold 2, 000 fans but it will now hold around 50, 000 World Cup supporters.

The stadium underwent a minor upgrade for the 2009 Confederations Cup, a new roof was added to the eastern stand. The stadium hosted three games during that tournament including the Brazil match in which they thrashed Italy 3-0.

At the 2010 World Cup the Loftus Versfeld Stadium gets to host five games from the group stages. The second biggest of which could be the game between World Cup favourites Spain and the next best team in their group Chile. Other group games played there include Serbia v Ghana, Cameroon v Denmark and USA v Algeria, so there will be a strong African presence at the stadium. The stadium holds its final game in the Second Round.

As perviously mentioned the biggest game at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium has to be the game between hosts South Africa and Uruguay from Group A. The game is sure to be a sellout and a great spectacle for all.

The Loftus Versfeld Stadium also has a strong rugby usage, it is home to Super 14 rugby club the Bulls and the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup. It has been used for big tournaments too in the past, games from the 1995 Rugby World Cup were held there and also games from the 1996 African Cup of Nations, in which South Africa were successful hosts.

Pretoria is a major football city, Arcadia and Berea Park were the city's first professional sides and on a more recent level Mamelodi Sundowns, and Pretoria City, now called SuperSport United now play there.
